1999 Topps Finest Football |
|
1999 Topps Finest was released in the middle of September 1999 with boxes available in two configurations. The first was a 24-pack Hobby box with 6 cards per pack. The second was a Home Team Advantage box with 1 12-pack box features 13 cards per pack. Topps continued to skinny down the checklist size of Finest, going from 359 in 1996, to 350 in 1997, 270 in 1998, and now 175 in 1999. This also marks the first time since the inaugural release in 1994 that the set is contained in ones series. Cards are printed on 27-pt card stock with the traditional protective Finest peel on the front, the last year Topps would include the peel. The set is broken up into 124 base veteran cards and 51 short print cards. 11 are part of the Gems subset featuring some of the biggest NFL stars, 11 are part of the Sensations subset featuring emerging talents, and the final 29 are Rookie Cards. This set marks the first time Finest featured multiple parallel cards to the base set. The ubiquitous Refractors return again along with first time Gold Refractors serial numbered out of 100 and feature die cut (or deckle) edging. Leading Indicators marks the only foray the brand made with Thermochromic ink, revealing breakdowns on a player's stats gained from the left side, right side, or middle of the field. Other popular inserts include Future's Finest making its sophomore appearance, Team Finest, and Prominent Figures all serial numbered. Prominent Figures can difficult to track down due to the numbering scheme being based off of NFL records at the time for passing, rushing, and receiving yardage and touchdowns. The Home Team Advantage jumbo box was the only way to find Team Finest Red, Gold, and their refractor variations while providing better odds on finding Blue variations compared to it's Hobby bretheran on a cost per pack/box basis. |
